Museo Diocesano de Pasig 2012

one of the key events for this year's  "Pista ng Bayan" is the opening of Museo Diocesano de Pasig. I was able to visit the museum and found it impressive due to its equipment, fixtures and audio-visual presentations that are similar to other state of the art museums. the exhibit entitles "Sa Paglipas ng Panahon" showcased a mural depicting the history of the church of Pasig, old stone parts of the church, priest vestments and vessels and of course the different mantos and vestments of the Patrona Coronada and Festejada.

Viva Nuestra Señora de Caridad!

Our Lady Of Charity Agoo, La Union

from wikipilipinas
In 17 century, a three men set out to collect sea salt for preserving the meat for the copper miners, before reaching the bay of Nipe, the strong storm came. As they need to encamped themselves because their canaos were ruined by the storm. They seen a small bundle floating on a piece of wood that they mistook for a sea bird. In reality, it was a small statue of Mother Mary holding the infant Jesus in her left arm and a gold cross in her right. Inscribed on the wooden board were the words, Yo soy la Virgen de la Caridad (I am the Virgin of Charity).
In the Philippines, the images are ancient, it was dated back to the early years of the Spanish colonization. The image of Our Lady of Charity or Apo Caridad de Agoo was enshrined at the Basilica in Agoo, La Union, and the other image also called as Apo Caridad de Bantay was at the Parish Church of Bantay,Ilocos Sur. The shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad in Bantay, Ilocos Sur was founded by Fr. Juan de Montoya, OSA.
[edit] Apo Caridad de Agoo
It is also refers to Our Lady of Cord, because it wears a cord around its waistline in the of Augustinian cincture, with likeness to Cincture of the San Agustin Church in Manila. Caridad was the title given to her by the Ilocano devotees, in gratitude for favors received from her charitable hand.
The people believed that their rich land and sea resources are because of the infinite charity and compassion for them of Our Lady of Charity.

VIVA Virgen De La Regla!

September 8 has always been a date to look forward to, mainly because it is the day when we celebrate the birth of our Mother and another thing is that in the Immaculate Concepcion Parish of Pasig, it is the day when the diocese is visited by a canonically crowned image of our Lady. its good to see that a lot of devotees flock in the cathedral to see and to touch the miraculous image of our Mother. white hankies waved into the air while people shout "Viva la Virgen".  truly a great display of devotion.

however...

the solemnity and holiness of the occasion banish when the crowd goes "wild" and there were a sort of "stampede". what was the commotion all about? people are very eager to get flowers and other ornaments from the carossa.  some pushing and a a lot of shouting. small quarrel on the side and even exchange of harsh words were heard. all of these chaos in front of our Lady.

what are the flowers  and ornaments for? souvenir? keepsake? "agimat"? "pampaswerte"?  perhaps we should analyze our self first. is our devotion to our Lady match our everyday actions and the way we treat others???

on the lighter side, i have  here a short history of Our Lady of the Rule. taken from  http://www.mysmartschools.ph/web/nuestrasenyora/virgendelaregla.htm

May this enrich our devotion to our the Virgen De La regal.

Virgen de la Regla

The first image of Virgen de la Regla brought to Opon was a painting. It was brought by Fr. Francisco Avalle when he was installed as its first parish priest in 1735. The painting was originally from the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Regla in Chipiona, Andalucia, Spain, where Fr. Avalle lived and received religious education for ten years. In Opon, he made use of the painting to introduce to the islanders the devotion to the Virgen de la Regla. This lovely painting of the Virgin, which was retouched in 1873, has survived the passage of time and is currently displayed for veneration at the hagkanan, a special room set apart for the Virgin at the back of the Opon church, above the sacristy. The traditional statue that is encased in glass and can be viewed by the faithful inside the hagkanan is the first copy of that lovely painting. The finely-chiseled statue was carved sometime in 1735 as ordered by Cruz Lauron, a prominent native of the island. He had the statue carved to thank the Virgin for curing him from a terminal affliction. If my calculation is correct, both the painting and the statue of the Virgin we see in the hagkanan are at least 264 years old.
In 1954, the patroness of Opon was put in the limelight. The year was declared as a Marian Year and the Shrine of the Virgen de la Regla was designated as the Official Pilgrimage Place for the Archdiocese of Cebu. On that year, the church of Opon became the single most visited place in the whole of Visayas. According to statistics, at least 200,000 pilgrims flocked to Opon to pay homage to the Virgin. The Archdiocese of Cebu held the first Archdiocesan Marian Congress on that same year. At the conclusion of the congress, on November 27,1954, the Virgen de la Regla was canonically crowned by the late Julio Cardinal Rosales in the presence of an estimated 300,000 people at the Capitol Site. The crowns for the Virgin and for the child Jesus used in the canonical coronation were earlier blessed by His Holiness Pope Pius XII in Rome.
Today the Virgen de la Regla stands as a symbol and pride of the island. Opon is synonymous with Virgen de la Regla. Everyday hundreds of pilgrims from different parts of the country come to Opon to offer candles, flowers, letters and even their precious jewelry to thank the Virgin for favors received. Some come to kiss or simply touch the Virgin and pray for her intercession. There are also those donate clothes for the Virgin. The reservation for the clothes already goes beyond the year 2,000. The Saturday morning votive mass offered in her honor is always well-attended rain or shine. The multitude of people who attend the celebration of the Virgin’s fiesta, which happens every 21st of November, is a revelation of the number of her devotees. Well, the devotees are countless. Why is the Virgin so dear to many? Because to many of her devotees she is their unfailing mother and their hope.
